March 2011 Reader of the Month

Our Reader of the Month for March is Nia!  Nia is a 3rd grader who loves to read. I'm thrilled to share her interview so you can learn more about her as a reader!

Mrs. Read-A-Lot: What is your favorite book?  Who would you recommend it to?

Nia: My favorite book is Harry Potter.  I like all of them.  I would recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy.

Mrs. Read-A-Lot: Where do you like to read?  Can you describe your favorite reading spot?

Nia: I like to read at the library because it is quiet.  I sit on a little couch that looks like a candy cane in the kids' section.  The couch is soft.

Mrs. Read-A-Lot: When do you like to read?

Nia: I like to read outside in the summer sun.

Mrs. Read-A-Lot: What are the last three books you have read?

Nia: 1. Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie

2. Chicken Dance

3. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

4. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Mrs. Read-A-Lot: Do you prefer paperback or hardcover books?

Nia: I prefer paperback books because of you bend it you can unbend it.

Mrs. Read-A-Lot: How do you choose a book?

Nia: I look at the back cover and look at the jacket flap.

Mrs. Read-A-Lot: Reading is...

Nia: ...delightful because sometimes you learn more about the author at the end of the book.

Thanks to Nia for being Reader of the Month and sharing the pictures of all the interesting places where she reads!  I'm a huge Harry Potter fan myself.  I love Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.  I can't believe the last movie is going to be released this year and then it'll be the end of Harry Potter!  I have the The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook: From Cauldron Cakes to Knickerbocker Glory--More Than 150 Magical Recipes for Muggles and Wizards on my Nook...maybe I'll have to make a recipe and reread Azkaban!

Reading Rewards

State testing made this week a little out of the ordinary so I don't have pictures to post for our slide show this week.  I do, however, still have something exciting to post!  This week, Jackie was the first student to earn a book for reading rewards.  Other students have chosen to trade in their reading reward stickers for candy or pencils, but Jackie has been saving and saving and saving!  I brought in three paperback books I would recommend to her and she chose: 

The Lemonade War

By Jacqueline Davies.

This book is about a brother and sister who end up each running his and her own lemonade stand and competing with each other to make the most money.  Each chapter alternates being told from his perspective and then her perspective.

 And here she is writing her name into her very own book.  She was reading it this week after she finished her ISAT testing and was telling me about why Steve and his sister are trying to outdo each other with their lemonade stands!

State Testing

This week and next week students in certain grades will be participating in state testing in our school district.  It’s a good idea to get to bed early before test days so you are well-rested.  Also, make sure to eat a healthy breakfast the days you will be testing.

I hope everyone who is testing has a book ready to read when he or she is done with the test!  For those kiddos who aren’t testing this week, I hope you are still reading everyday.  Reading everyday is the best thing you can do for yourself.  If you read everyday and read lots of different kinds of books and practice good reading strategies, then you will be ready for the state tests.
